Lake Tiriara is a small freshwater lake in the centre of southern Mangaia, in the inland depression bounded by the makatea ring. It is a quiet patch of water surrounded by taro patches and palms, important to the island's local mythology and a good stop on a slow walk across the interior. Local guides will point out the eel population — eels feature in Mangaian creation stories.
