Hibiscus Highway

Scenic coastal road between Savusavu and the Natewa Peninsula

The Hibiscus Highway is the coastal road running south-east from Savusavu along the southern shore of Vanua Levu towards the Natewa Peninsula. The name is unofficial but apt: the road passes through coconut groves, small Fijian villages, and rocky bays where coconut palms lean over turquoise water. The drive is one of the finest in Fiji, especially in the late afternoon when the light on the bay turns gold.

The road is surfaced only in sections and becomes rough after rain, but a regular car can manage it in dry conditions. There are no facilities along the way — carry water and snacks. Several small beaches along the route are good for swimming; you can pull over wherever looks good and you will almost certainly have the place to yourself. The end of the sealed road at Natewa Bay is about 90 minutes from Savusavu.
