Namena Marine Reserve

World-class soft coral diving reserve south of Vanua Levu

The Namena Marine Reserve, about 35 km south of Savusavu, protects an atoll system with some of the most extraordinary soft coral gardens anywhere in the Pacific. The colours — orange, purple, pink, red — are extraordinary on a good dive, and the fish life is prolific: barracuda, sharks, manta rays, and huge schools of reef fish are reliably present. The reserve is accessible only by boat from Savusavu or from liveaboard operations.

Most Savusavu dive operators offer day trips to Namena; the crossing takes about 45 minutes each way in a fast dinghy. Two tank dives are standard. The best conditions are from May to October, outside cyclone season, when visibility can reach 30–40 metres. Liveaboard trips allow more dives over more days and access to the outer reef systems.

A story
Namena was one of the first community-managed marine protected areas in Fiji, established by the Fijian village of Daku to protect the reef from destructive fishing practices. The villagers enforce strict no-take rules and collect fees from visiting dive operators, with the proceeds funding education and health services. The reserve is now considered one of the healthiest coral ecosystems in the South Pacific as a result.
