Savusavu Hot Springs

Geothermal vents on the Savusavu waterfront

The hot springs of Savusavu are not a spa complex or a tourist facility — they are simply geothermal vents that push scalding water up through cracks in the rock along the main waterfront road. You can walk past them any time; the steam is visible in the morning and the heat is palpable if you hold a hand close. Locals use the most accessible vents to cook food, wrapping taro or cassava in leaves and lowering it into the water.

The springs are a free and freely accessible attraction. They are the most vivid reminder that Vanua Levu sits in an actively volcanic zone — the same forces that created the island are still at work. The best viewing is from the road between the market and the Copra Shed Marina, where several vents are concentrated near the waterfront.
