The 60-kilometre coast road that loops around Moorea is the only road you need. Most visitors hire transport from the Vaiare ferry terminal on arrival.
Scooters are the standard option — agile on the narrow coast road, cheap (around 6,000 CFP a day) and the easiest way to do the full circumnavigation in a relaxed half-day. Helmets are required.
Cars are roughly twice the price of scooters but useful if you have luggage, are travelling as a family, or want to keep the dry option. Local hire firms (Avis, Europcar, Albert) have desks at the ferry terminal and the airport.
Le Truck — a converted open-sided truck-bus — used to be the local public transport but has been largely replaced by infrequent scheduled buses connecting Vaiare with Pape'ete-bound ferries. Not really viable for getting around the island.
Bicycles are available in some of the resort areas and work for shorter circuits, though the road can be hot and tour buses don't always give a generous margin.
Hitchhiking is reasonably common locally and generally safe.
