The needle-shaped basalt peak that dominates every Belvedere photograph is Mouaroa, sometimes Anglicised as "the Shark's Tooth". It rises to 880 metres in a single near-vertical spike from the saddle behind the bays, a remnant of the resistant central plug of Moorea's ancient volcano. The peak itself is a serious technical climb requiring rope and is rarely attempted, but the Three Coconuts Pass trail traverses the ridge to its east and gives spectacular close-range views from a moderate hike. The trailhead is at the Belvedere car park; allow three hours round-trip.
