Pao Pao sits at the head of Cook's Bay and is the closest thing Moorea has to a town centre — a school, a few church buildings, a market hall with a Saturday-morning vegetable market, a couple of grocery stores, and the small Manutea distillery where Moorea's pineapple rum and fruit juices are made. The main coast road passes straight through, but most of the day-to-day life happens on the short side lanes parallel to the bay. It is a working village rather than a tourist village, and stopping for an hour to walk around is a useful corrective to the impression — easily gathered from the hotel coast — that the whole island is a resort.
