Blue Lagoon (Lagon Bleu)

A shallow turquoise pool inside the atoll formed by a ring of coral motu (islets), about an hour by boat west of Avatoru. The water is so clear and so shallow that it glows an electric blue from the air and a vivid green at the surface. Blacktip reef sharks patrol the shallows in numbers — dozens of juveniles circling in knee-deep water — and are entirely harmless.

Day trips run most mornings from Avatoru, stopping at the Blue Lagoon for snorkelling and swimming before returning via a motu for a picnic lunch. Ask your pension owner which operator is running the following day; they all offer similar trips at similar prices (around 6,500–8,000 CFP per person). Bring sunscreen — there is no shade on the water.
