Plaza de España

Colonial-era plaza with rare surviving Spanish structures

The old heart of Spanish colonial Guam: a broad plaza that served as the centre of government for over two centuries. The Governor's Palace stood here; most of it was destroyed in World War II, but the Chocolate House — a small octagonal building used by the governor's wife for afternoon receptions — survives. It's one of the few intact Spanish colonial structures left on the island. The plaza is a pleasant open space, with the cathedral on one side and government buildings on the other.
