Richard F. Taitano Micronesian Area Research Center

Tucked into a building on the University of Guam campus, the Richard F. Taitano Micronesian Area Research Center — almost always called MARC — holds the single most important collection of historical and ethnographic material on Guam and the wider Micronesia. The Spanish Documents Collection alone runs to thousands of pages of microfilm copied from archives in Madrid and Seville; the photographic and oral-history archives cover the Pacific War, the post-war American period, and the long history of the Chamorro.

The reading room is open to the public on weekdays — students researching family history sit alongside the occasional visiting scholar — and the staff are generous with their knowledge. A small permanent exhibition in the entrance hall introduces Chamorro and Micronesian material culture. Free; bring photo ID.
