University of Guam

The University of Guam (UOG) — Unibetsedåt Guåhan in Chamorro — sits on a hillside in southern Mangilao, the largest higher-education institution in Micronesia and the cultural anchor of the village. The campus is open and easy to wander: low concrete buildings under flame trees, a small open theatre, and views down to Pago Bay from the eastern edge.

The marine laboratory at the bottom of the bluff is a serious centre for coral reef research; the small public aquarium attached to it is worth a look. The campus also hosts the Charter Day fiesta each March, a good day to see traditional Chamorro dance, fiesta food, and student crafts in one place.

A story
When the university was founded in 1952 as the Territorial College of Guam, it shared its first classrooms with a Quonset hut left over from the Pacific War. Today it has around 4,000 students and is the only land-grant institution between Hawaii and the Philippines. The campus has its own marine laboratory at Pago Bay, where coral-reef research has continued unbroken for over fifty years.
