South Pacific Memorial Park

South Pacific Memorial Park is a solemn Japanese memorial site in Yigo, built near the former wartime command area at Mataguac Hill. The park has a small chapel, memorial markers, and a restrained atmosphere that contrasts with the more American-focused interpretation at the War in the Pacific National Historical Park units.

It is worth visiting if you are tracing Guam's wartime history from more than one angle. The site is quiet, sometimes empty, and better approached with respect than curiosity. Allow twenty minutes unless you are reading every marker carefully.

A story
The memorial stands near Mataguac Hill, where the last organised Japanese command position on Guam collapsed on 10 August 1944. It is a Japanese memorial on American territory, which gives the site a quiet complexity missing from many battlefield stops.
