Mount Ruapehu is New Zealand's largest active volcano and the giant presence above Ohakune. Its snowy winter slopes feed the Turoa ski area, while in warmer months the mountain is a stark volcanic landscape of lava, tussock, and wide Central Plateau views.
You do not need to climb it to feel its pull: the mountain dominates the roads around Ohakune and Raetihi. Go up only with proper weather checks and gear, as conditions on Ruapehu can change fast.
