Ohakune sits on the southern edge of Tongariro National Park, close to the road up to Turoa ski field on Mount Ruapehu. In winter it is a ski town. In summer it becomes a practical base for cycling, short walks, and the rough volcanic country between the Central Plateau and Whanganui.
The town has more personality than many mountain gateways. The giant carrot at the entrance is silly, but it also tells you something real about the surrounding market gardens. Around town you get ski lodges, bike hire shops, cafes, and the steady presence of Ruapehu above the roofs when the cloud lifts.
Ohakune works best if you want a day that mixes mountain scenery with one or two local stops. Ride or walk the Old Coach Road, drive up toward Turoa for the open alpine views, then come back to town for the carrot park and a slower evening.
