Lake Rotopounamu is a small, forest-ringed lake off State Highway 47, west of Turangi. The track makes an easy loop through native bush, with lake beaches, birdlife, and views toward Mt Pihanga when the weather opens.
The walk is usually listed at about 5 km and takes around two hours. It is a good choice when the alpine weather is poor higher up in Tongariro National Park, or when you want a quieter walk than the big-name volcanic routes.
