Turangi sits where the Tongariro River comes down from the volcanic plateau toward the southern end of Lake Taupo. It is smaller and quieter than Taupo, but it has a clearer outdoor identity: trout water, river trails, rafting bases, and easy access to the western side of Tongariro National Park.
The town's strongest claim is fishing. The Tongariro is one of New Zealand's classic rainbow and brown trout rivers, and even non-anglers can get a feel for it on the riverside trail and at the National Trout Centre just south of town. Rafting trips run the same river when you want the water to move faster.
Turangi also works as a gentler base for short walks and hot pools around the lake's southern shore. Lake Rotopounamu is a fine half-day forest walk, and Tokaanu has thermal pools and a small geothermal walk a few minutes away by road. It is still a gateway town, but it is not only a gateway.
