Tongariro National Trout Centre

Freshwater museum, hatchery, aquarium, and trout-viewing stop south of Turangi.

The Tongariro National Trout Centre explains the fishery that made Turangi famous. It has a small freshwater museum, hatchery, aquarium displays, a fishing library, and places where you can watch large trout in clear water.

It is 4 km south of town on State Highway 1, close enough to fold into the Tongariro River Trail or visit on the way toward Tongariro National Park. The setting is more appealing than the words "trout centre" suggest: native bush, cold water, and the river close by.
