Ohira Bay Basalt Columns

Coastal walk to dramatic columnar basalt cliffs on the south coast

The columnar basalt formations at Ohira Bay on the south coast of Chatham Island are the islands' most dramatic geological feature — hexagonal cliffs of black volcanic rock that look almost machined, rising directly out of the Southern Ocean. The Chathams are themselves the eroded remnants of an ancient volcanic chain, and Ohira preserves the clearest evidence of that origin.

Reaching the bay requires permission to cross private farmland and a short walk across rough country. Ask at the visitor information centre in Waitangi for current access arrangements. Allow half a day, and bring waterproofs and sturdy footwear — there is no shelter and the weather changes fast.
