Waitangi

The main settlement of the Chathams, with the small harbour and the museum

Waitangi (not to be confused with the Northland town of the same name) is the largest settlement on the Chatham Islands — a small harbour village of a few hundred residents that serves as the islands' administrative and commercial centre. The harbour is a working fishing port and the seasonal home of the Chathams' famously well-stocked crayfishing fleet.

The Chatham Islands Museum, on the main road through town, traces the history of the archipelago from Moriori settlement to whaling, farming, and the modern era. There is a small but useful information centre, a couple of cafes, and the islands' single fuel pump. Most accommodation is dotted around the nearby coast rather than in the village itself.
