Mathesons Bay is the softer side of Leigh's coast: a small, sheltered beach with holiday houses behind it and rocky edges to explore at low tide. It is a better choice than Goat Island when you want a swim and a picnic rather than a full marine-reserve outing.
The bay also has geological interest. Fossil shells and other marine remains have been recorded in the surrounding cliffs and rock platforms, a reminder that this quiet little beach sits in a much older coastal story.
