Leigh

Small Auckland-region fishing village beside New Zealand's first marine reserve at Goat Island.

Leigh is a small fishing village north of Auckland, but its pull is bigger than its size. The village sits between quiet bays, surf beaches, and Goat Island, where the Cape Rodney-Okakari Point Marine Reserve protects clear water, rocky reef, and snapper that have learned not to fear snorkellers.

The reserve is the reason to come. On a calm day you can snorkel straight from the shore, take a glass-bottom boat, or visit the Goat Island Marine Discovery Centre to understand what you are looking at underwater. It is one of the easiest places near Auckland to see New Zealand marine life without a boat or a big plan.

Leigh itself is simple: a wharf, a general store, a few houses, and the Sawmill Cafe, a music venue with more personality than most towns this small can claim. Add Mathesons Bay and long Pakiri Beach, and Leigh becomes a good spare day from Matakana, Warkworth, or Auckland rather than just a dot on the coast.

Bars and Cafes

Leigh has one obvious social anchor, and it is worth knowing about even if you are only here for the marine reserve.

Things to Do

Leigh is about water first: snorkelling at Goat Island, short coastal walks, and beaches that feel much farther from Auckland than they are. Check sea conditions before planning around the marine reserve; poor visibility can turn a great snorkelling day into an ordinary beach stop.
