Mitre Peak is the mountain that gives Milford Sound its most recognisable profile. It rises sharply from the dark water, with stacked summits that look simple from a distance and more rugged as clouds and light move across the rock.
You do not need to climb it to appreciate it; most travellers experience Mitre Peak from the foreshore, a boat cruise, or a kayak on calm water. Dawn and late afternoon are the best times for photographs, though in Milford the shifting rain and mist can be just as memorable as clear weather.
