When to Go

The Tasman region is one of the sunniest parts of New Zealand, with over 2,500 hours of sunshine per year. Summer (December–February) is warm and dry, ideal for the Abel Tasman Coast Track and kayaking, though the main beaches can be crowded. January is the busiest month.

Shoulder season — March to April and October to November — is arguably the best time: still warm enough for swimming, fewer visitors, and the light has a quality that January heat haze doesn't allow. Winter is mild and quiet; the Abel Tasman trail is walkable year-round, but the huts are less used and the forest birds are more noticeable. Rain can come at any time of year, but sustained wet periods are less common than on the West Coast.
