Mount Victoria / Takarunga

Mount Victoria / Takarunga is the highest point in Devonport, a 66-metre volcanic cone that takes about ten minutes to climb from the base and rewards with a clear 360-degree view: the Waitemata Harbour, Rangitoto Island, the downtown Auckland skyline, and on clear days the Manukau Harbour and the Waitakere Ranges beyond. It is a closer and less-visited viewpoint than North Head, and often uncrowded even when the waterfront is busy.

The path begins near the corner of Kerr Street and Victoria Road, a short walk from the main street. A small summit platform gives a comfortable viewpoint. Children find the climb an easy adventure and the view from the top satisfying. Combined with the North Head walk, the two peaks make for a good few hours' exploration of the peninsula.

A story
Takarunga was a significant pā (fortified village) for the local Māori iwi long before European settlement. The terracing for the pā is still clearly visible on the slopes. The name means "the place above" — a description of the summit's commanding position over the harbour.
