Waihi Beach is the town's reason for existing: a long sweep of pale sand facing the Bay of Plenty. It is broad enough for walking, swimming, beach games, and beginner-friendly surf, with lifeguard patrols at the busier northern end in summer.
The beach is at its best outside the hottest holiday rush, when there is room to walk the sand slowly and look north toward the Coromandel coast. In summer, swim between the flags and watch the surf, which can still surprise visitors used to sheltered harbours.
