Waihi Beach is a small Bay of Plenty holiday town where the appeal is simple and mostly outdoors: a long white-sand beach, a surf-town village, and walking tracks at both ends of the coast. It sits north of Tauranga Harbour, where the Bay of Plenty begins to lean toward the Coromandel.
The main beach is the obvious draw. It runs for kilometres, is good for swimming between the flags in summer, and has enough surf for beginners without feeling like a serious surf pilgrimage. The village behind it has cafes, local shops, and the relaxed feel of a place that gets busy in summer but still belongs to its regulars.
The better day comes when you add the headlands. From the north end, the Orokawa Bay Track follows the coast to an undeveloped bay backed by native bush. Above the village, the Waihi Beach Trig gives the quick high view. At the southern end, Bowentown Heads and Anzac Bay swap the open Pacific for sheltered harbour water and old pa-site viewpoints.
Waihi Beach is not trying to compete with Rotorua or Mount Maunganui. It is a worthwhile coastal stop if you want a slower beach day with enough walking to make it feel earned.
