Matiu/Somes Island sits in Wellington Harbour and makes a good half-day trip from Lower Hutt or central Wellington. The island has been used as a quarantine station, an animal quarantine site, and an internment camp during both world wars, so the walk around it mixes harbour views with a compact but layered history.
Ferries stop only on selected sailings, so check times before setting out. Once ashore, the island is best explored on foot; bring water, sun protection, and enough time to enjoy the views back toward the Hutt Valley and Wellington.
