Trentham Racecourse

Trentham Racecourse, in the suburb of the same name, is the main thoroughbred racing venue for the Wellington region and one of the leading tracks in New Zealand. The course hosts major race meetings throughout the summer and autumn seasons, including the New Zealand Oaks and the Thorndon Mile. The setting — ringed by hills and with a grandstand overlooking the full circuit — is one of the more attractive racing venues in the country.

Race days draw a mix of serious punters and casual visitors enjoying a day out. The course is run by the Wellington Racing Club, founded in 1875. Even if you have no interest in racing, a visit on a sunny race day, with the Tararua foothills as backdrop, makes for a pleasant afternoon.
