Mangungu Mission

Hokianga mission house where the largest signing of the Treaty of Waitangi took place.

Mangungu Mission stands above the harbour west of Horeke, a plain white mission house with a large place in New Zealand history. On 12 February 1840, it hosted the largest signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, with local chiefs gathering here after the first signing at Waitangi.

The house is modest, which is part of its force. Exhibits explain the Wesleyan mission, the Hokianga timber frontier, and the Treaty signing without turning the place into a grand monument.
