Horeke

Small Hokianga village with early timber history, Treaty memory, and rare basalt boulder walks.

Horeke is a tiny settlement on the upper Hokianga Harbour, but it carries more history than most towns ten times its size. It was one of the first European settlements in New Zealand, a timber and shipbuilding place before the Bay of Islands became the easier story to tell.

The village itself is quiet: a wharf, old waterfront buildings, and a harbour that changes mood with the tide. The reason to make the detour is the pairing of Wairere Boulders, a strange basalt landscape in the bush, and Mangungu Mission, where the Treaty of Waitangi drew its largest signing.

Horeke works best as a slow Hokianga day rather than a checklist stop. Come with a car, walk the boulders, follow the harbour road to the mission, and leave time to sit by the water. The appeal is not polish; it is the sense that early New Zealand history happened here at human scale.
