A small beachside cafe at Ahipara, ten minutes' drive west of Kaitaia, with one of the best fish-and-chips orders in the Far North — locally caught snapper or gurnard, lightly battered, with thick-cut chips. There's a deck overlooking Ninety Mile Beach where you can watch the surfers and the 4WDs heading north up the sand.
Good for breakfast too — the cafe does eggs Benedict with locally smoked salmon and freshly baked bread.
