Kaitaia punches above its weight for a town this size. The Te Ahu Centre is the obvious starting point: a museum, visitor centre, and community hub that tells the story of the Far North with real depth — covering the five local iwi, the Dalmatian settlers who came to dig kauri gum, and the European farming history that followed. Give it an hour.
North of town, Gumdiggers Park near Awanui is one of the more unusual attractions in Northland: an authentic 19th-century gum-digging site where you can walk among preserved diggings and see ancient kauri logs unearthed from the swamp — some over 45,000 years old. It is a small, low-key place run with genuine enthusiasm.
