Te Ahu Centre

Combined museum, library, and cultural hub for the Far North

The Te Ahu Centre is Kaitaia's civic and cultural heart — a combined museum, visitor information centre, library, and cinema under one roof. The museum covers the Far North with genuine care: the five local iwi (Ngāti Kuri, Te Rarawa, Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Kahu, and Te Aupouri), the Dalmatian gum-diggers who came here from Croatia in the 19th century, and the kauri timber industry that shaped the region. The displays are well done and the staff are knowledgeable. Worth a stop of an hour or so, especially on a wet day.

A story
The centre takes its name from Te Ahu, the volcanic cone sacred to local iwi — the building is sited at the spot where five iwi (Ngāti Kuri, Ngāti Kahu, Te Rarawa, Te Aupouri, Ngāpuhi) traditionally come together, and the architecture deliberately uses five entry points to reflect this.
