Duke of Marlborough Hotel

The Duke of Marlborough Hotel on The Strand is the social heart of Russell — a heritage hotel with a broad veranda directly on the waterfront, looking out across the bay to Paihia. The bar is open to non-guests and is the best place in Russell for a drink at any time of day.

The veranda tables are the draw: cold local beers, the Bay of Islands stretching in front of you, boats moving on the water, and the unhurried pace that defines this village. The bar menu covers burgers, seafood chowder, and fish and chips — solid pub food. The restaurant inside is more formal and focuses on local seafood. Book for dinner in summer; walk in any other time.

A story
The Duke of Marlborough claims to hold the oldest liquor licence in New Zealand, granted in 1840. The original building burned down more than once and the current structure is a later rebuild, but the licence has been continuous — making it arguably the most historically grounded pub in the country.
