Hole in the Rock Cruise

The Hole in the Rock at Cape Brett is the iconic excursion from the Bay of Islands — a sea arch at the tip of a peninsula about 15 km northeast of Russell, large enough for commercial vessels to pass through. The boat trip out crosses some of the most beautiful stretches of the bay, and dolphins often accompany the vessel.

Half-day cruises depart from both Russell and Paihia, with the return trip passing through the wider islands of the bay. The larger operators run fast catamarans; smaller operators offer more personalised sailing trips. A full-day version stops at some of the bay's 144 islands for swimming and kayaking. A story
The Hole in the Rock at Cape Brett is a sea arch large enough for boats to pass through — and the crossing is timed to the swell. On rough days the skippers circle and wait for the right moment; on calm days the boat glides through and everyone on board gets a few seconds of near-darkness surrounded by sheer rock.
