The thermal pools are Hanmer's reason for being. The complex has a mix of mineral pools, cooler family areas, private pools, and spa facilities, so it can be a lazy soak or a full half-day recovery stop.
It is developed rather than wild, but that is part of the draw after a long South Island drive. Evening is especially good, when the air cools and the steam starts to show.
