Hanmer Springs

Canterbury alpine spa town built around hot pools, forest trails, and mountain views.

Hanmer Springs is a small alpine spa town in North Canterbury, tucked below forested hills off State Highway 7. The hot pools are the headline, but the place works because you can pair a soak with easy walking, mountain biking, and clear views over the Hanmer Basin.

This is not a town of grand monuments. Its appeal is physical and simple: hot mineral water, pine and larch forest, river gorges, frosty winter mornings, and summer evenings when the hills hold the light. Conical Hill gives the classic short view; Hanmer Forest gives you room to stretch your legs.

Hanmer is worth a spare day if you are crossing between Christchurch, Kaikoura, and the West Coast. Come for the pools, but do not leave without walking above town.
