Church of the Good Shepherd

The Church of the Good Shepherd is the image most people carry away from Tekapo: a small stone church on the lake edge, with blue water and the Southern Alps behind it. It was opened in 1935 as a memorial to Mackenzie Country pioneers and is still an active church, not just a photo prop.

The site can be busy, especially when tour buses arrive. The building is modest inside, but the setting is exceptional; visit early or late if you want the lake view without a crowd around the fence.
