Lake Tekapo is a small village beside a startling turquoise glacial lake in the Mackenzie Basin, 225 kilometres southwest of Christchurch on State Highway 8. The lake's colour comes from rock flour carried down from the Southern Alps, and on clear days the water and mountains make the place feel much larger than the village itself.
The classic daytime stop is the Church of the Good Shepherd, a small stone church placed almost theatrically on the lakeshore. Above town, Mount John Observatory gives the best high view over the lake, the basin, and the Southern Alps.
Tekapo's second life begins after dark. The town sits inside the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, and stargazing has become one of its main reasons to exist as a travel stop rather than just a scenic pause. Add hot pools, winter snow, summer lupins, and the road toward Aoraki / Mount Cook, and Tekapo earns more than a quick photo break.
