When to Go to Canterbury

Canterbury has two distinct climate zones: the coastal and plains areas around Christchurch have a temperate oceanic climate, while the interior Mackenzie Basin and Alps have a continental mountain climate with much more extreme temperatures.

Summer (December–February) is the most popular time: long days, reliable weather on the plains, and the lupin flowers in the Mackenzie Basin peaking in November–December. This is high season for Mount Cook, Tekapo, and Kaikoura, and accommodation books up fast.

Autumn (March–May) brings golden colours on the beech forest at Arthur's Pass and quieter roads. Good walking conditions continue until late April.

Winter (June–August) is the time for snow sports: the ski fields at Mount Dobson and Fox Peak operate above the Mackenzie Basin, and there is skiing at Porters Pass (80km from Christchurch) and several other areas on the Main Divide. Lake Tekapo's stargazing is best in winter when the nights are longest and clearest.

Spring (September–November) is variable: weather can be unsettled, but snowmelt brings rivers to full flow and the lupins start appearing from late October.
