Fyffe House is Kaikoura's oldest surviving European building, tied to the shore-whaling station that operated here in the 19th century. Its most memorable detail is structural: part of the house was built on whale vertebrae foundations.
The house gives useful context before or after walking the peninsula. Kaikoura's modern whale watching feels different when you have seen how closely the town's early European economy was tied to whaling.
