Kaikoura sits on a narrow strip of coast where the Seaward Kaikoura Range drops almost straight into the Pacific. The town is small, but the setting is not: snowy mountains behind you, deep ocean in front, and marine life unusually close to shore.
The reason is Kaikoura Canyon, a deep submarine canyon just off the peninsula. It brings rich feeding grounds close enough that sperm whales, dusky dolphins, fur seals, and albatrosses can all be seen without mounting a major expedition. Whale Watch Kaikoura is the headline trip, but the coast has plenty for travellers who prefer to keep their feet on land.
The Kaikoura Peninsula Walkway is the best free outing, with clifftop views, seabirds, old whaling sites, and the seal colony around Point Kean. Inland, Mt Fyffe turns the whole coast into a map.
Kaikoura also has a clear food identity. The name means "meal of crayfish", and roadside seafood shacks north of town still make that more than a slogan. It is a strong stop even if you only have one day between Christchurch, Picton, and Marlborough wine country.
