The Snout Track is the easy day walk straight out of Picton, running along the long forested ridge that forms the eastern side of the harbour entrance. The full walk to the tip of the Snout and back is about three and a half hours; most people turn around at the Queen Charlotte View lookout an hour up, which gives 90 per cent of the view for half the time.
The track climbs steadily through regenerating bush, then opens out at intervals to give views across Picton, the ferry terminal, and the inner waterway of Queen Charlotte Sound — you can usually see the Interislander ferry working its way in or out from somewhere on the route. Best in the afternoon when the light is on the water.
