The Queen Charlotte Track is a 70-kilometre coastal walking and mountain-biking route along the ridges and bays of Queen Charlotte Sound. The full walk takes three to five days; one of its great strengths is that water taxis run from Picton to half a dozen drop-off points along the route, so you can walk any single section as a one-day trip and have your pack delivered ahead by boat.
The most popular day section is from Ship Cove (the historical landing point of Captain Cook) over the ridge to Furneaux Lodge or Endeavour Inlet — five to six hours of mostly easy graded track through regenerating native bush with frequent views down to the water. Bookable lodges and campsites along the route. Drinking water needs treatment in some places. Best avoided in mid-summer when sandflies in the bays can be brutal.
