Three national parks press in on the Nelson Bays region from different directions — Abel Tasman to the northwest, Kahurangi to the west, and Nelson Lakes to the south — and between them they account for most of what brings visitors here. The region also has a serious arts scene centred on Nelson city, good wine country in the river valleys, and some of the best cycling in the South Island.
