The Roberts Point Track is the most rewarding day hike out of Franz Josef. It climbs steeply through rainforest to a high viewpoint overlooking the Franz Josef Glacier from above — one of the best perspectives on the ice you can get without a helicopter.
The track is about 11–12 km return and takes a long day (6–7 hours). It includes several swing bridges and a rough scramble near the top. The Department of Conservation rates it as advanced. In wet weather it becomes very slippery and is best avoided. The reward at Roberts Point itself is panoramic: the glacier curving down its valley, the Waiho river bed below, and the snowfields of the Southern Alps beyond.
