Mount Tuhua Track is one of the stronger walks near Hokitika, climbing from the Lake Kaniere area through native forest toward a summit view over the West Coast. It is a real hike, not a lakeside stroll, and that is the point.
Check Department of Conservation conditions before setting out, carry proper wet-weather gear, and allow enough daylight for the climb and descent. On a clear day it gives Hokitika visitors a much wilder counterpoint to the beach and greenstone shops.
