Okarito is 13 kilometres off State Highway 6, reached by a sealed side road north of Franz Josef. There is no useful public transport to the village, so you need a car, a bike, or a tour transfer.
Allow about 25 minutes from Franz Josef and around 40 minutes from Hokitika in good conditions. West Coast rain can be heavy, and the side roads are narrow, so do not rush the drive after dark.
