Getting There

The main route through Westland is State Highway 6, which runs the full length of the West Coast from Westport in the north, through Hokitika, Franz Josef, Fox Glacier, and Haast, before crossing the Southern Alps via the Haast Pass to Wanaka and Queenstown. The road is sealed the whole way and the scenery along every section is worth the drive time.

The TranzAlpine train from Christchurch to Greymouth is one of New Zealand's classic rail journeys, crossing the Canterbury Plains and climbing through Arthur's Pass before descending to the coast. Greymouth is at the northern end of the West Coast region rather than within Westland itself, but it makes a natural starting point for a south-bound drive. InterCity buses operate daily on State Highway 6, connecting the main towns including Hokitika, Franz Josef, and Fox Glacier village, with connections to Queenstown via Haast.
