Aigantighe (pronounced "egg-and-tie") is one of those regional galleries that quietly punches well above its weight. The original building is a 1908 homestead, handsome and domestic in scale, which gives the collection an unusually relaxed atmosphere — art hung in rooms that feel lived-in rather than institutional. A modern extension provides more conventional gallery space for larger works and temporary exhibitions.
The collection covers New Zealand art from the colonial period through to the contemporary, with some international works alongside. There are strong examples of New Zealand landscape painting, works by well-known NZ artists, and pieces that wouldn't look out of place in a major city institution. Admission is free. The garden setting is pleasant, and there is usually a good temporary exhibition running alongside the permanent collection. Allow at least an hour; more if you take your time.
